Ephesians 2 : 1-9 And you hath he quickened a, who were dead in trespasses and sins; [2] Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: [3] Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. [4] But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, [5] Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) [6] And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: [7] That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. [8] For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: [9] Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Thorough Forgiveness Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight!Psalm 32:1 A healthy marriage requires confession when we do wrong and forgiveness from the one whom we have wronged. The word confess means to tell or make known, to acknowledge a wrongdoing. When we confess, God forgives. The Bible describes God’s forgiveness as thorough. The above verse from Psalm 32 refers to our sin as “out of sight,” while Psalm 103 uses a wonderful image of distance: “He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west” (Psalm 103:12). In the book of Hebrews, we hear God’s promise to forget our sins: “I will never again remember their sins and lawless deeds” (Hebrews 10:17). When your spouse sins against you, it stimulates hurt and perhaps anger. You may feel like lashing out, but the biblical response is loving confrontation. If he or she admits the wrong, the right response is to lovingly forgive. Perhaps you are saying, “But how can I forgive when it hurts so deeply?” Remember, forgiveness is not a feeling. It is rather a promise to lift judgment. “I’m deeply hurt and angry, but I choose to forgive you,” is a realistic statement. You are honest about your feelings, but you are choosing to forgive. You will no longer hold the wrong against your loved one.

Tradition! Every family has a special link to the past. Some remember their ethnic roots and can tell you about their proud heritage. Others have favorite stories of the struggles that their grandparents or great-grandparents endured. Still others remember the heroic acts, faith, wisdom, or accomplishments of an ancestor who made a mark and left a story (if not a photo), making the relatives who live today somehow special. This passage contains Jeremiah’s last-minute prophecies and what happened to him and to the nation around the time he was giving them. It’s Judah’s last hour—Jerusalem is under siege by the Babylonians (as Jeremiah predicted) and is about to fall. In case anyone doesn’t understand why, Jeremiah provides a vivid illustration through the Recabite family and their cherished past. As Christians, we have a long and glorious family tradition of seeking God and living for him. Although we should not emulate our spiritual ancestors merely out of tradition, we can and should learn from their example. We should seek God with all our hearts and obey his Word in every aspect of life, even if it means dying for Jesus Christ. Take some time to reflect on your personal spiritual heritage. Thank God for godly parents, grandparents, and other relatives who have kept your family on the right path. If you have no such memories or heritage, determine that it will begin with you and your family. Make spiritual memories that your children and grandchildren will reflect upon to gain strength and inspiration. Jeremiah 35:12-16 12Then the Lord gave this message to Jeremiah: 13“This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: Go and say to the people in Judah and Jerusalem, ‘Come and learn a lesson about how to obey me. 14The Recabites do not drink wine to this day because their ancestor Jehonadab told them not to. But I have spoken to you again and again, and you refuse to obey me. 15Time after time I sent you prophets, who told you, “Turn from your wicked ways, and start doing things right. Stop worshiping other gods so that you might live in peace here in the land I have given to you and your ancestors.” But you would not listen to me or obey me. 16The descendants of Jehonadab son of Recab have obeyed their ancestor completely, but you have refused to listen to me.’”

We all face difficult situations that involve the people we love. In some of these situations the wise course of action may not be clear. We may feel a heavy burden to act but have no idea what to do. Abraham found himself in such a situation. The Lord had told Abraham that he intended to destroy the people of Sodom and Gomorrah for their wickedness. Since Abraham’s nephew Lot lived among the people of these cities, Abraham was concerned for their welfare. So Abraham approached God and said, “ ‘ Will you sweep away both the righteous and the wicked? Suppose you find fifty righteous people living there in the city—will you still sweep it away and not spare it for their sakes? Surely you wouldn’t do such a thing, destroying the righteous along with the wicked. . . . Surely you wouldn’t do that! Should not the Judge of all the earth do what is right?’ And the LORD replied, ‘If I find fifty righteous people in Sodom, I will spare the entire city for their sake’ ” (Genesis 18:23-26). The bargaining went on: Suppose there are only forty-five . . . forty . . . thirty . . . twenty . . . ten? Finally God said, “Then I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.” (18:32). Abraham wasn’t sure what he could do in the situation he faced; he wasn’t even sure what was right in this situation. He talked it over with God, reasoning it out, trying to do whatever he could. When we don’t know how much of a change we can or even should make, we can start by talking it over with God. Then we can try to do as much as we feel confident doing

There are times when life just treats us unfairly. We may protest the injustices, fall victim to self-pity, give in to a “poor me” kind of attitude, or sink into depression. During these times when life is unfair, however, what we really need is serenity. If anyone in history could claim to have been treated unfairly, it was Joseph. He was one of twelve sons, the favorite of his father. In their jealousy, Joseph’s ten older brothers staged his death to fool their father and sold him into slavery in Egypt. Once a slave, Joseph devoted himself to serving his master well and was quickly promoted. He was then propositioned by his master’s wife, and when Joseph refused her, he was falsely accused of rape. Thrown into prison with no hope of release, he again did his best to serve. He was soon running the administration of the prison. Finally, after many long years, Joseph was freed. He was promoted to the position of prime minister of Egypt. From this position Joseph was able to eventually confront and forgive his brothers, who had sold him into slavery many years before (Genesis 37–45). It takes serenity, courage, and wisdom to maintain a healthy attitude when life isn’t fair. We can’t change the fact that our world is imperfect and things are far from the way they should be, but we can choose our attitudes. We need serenity from God to help us change our responses to the injustices of life. We need courage to face with optimism the days when we are treated unfairly. We need wisdom to know whether to fight injustice or to make the best of a bad situation
